- Animals, Power and Space: More-than-Human Political Geographies of Animal Health (since 2021)

In my recent research project, I look at the spatial politics of animals and viruses in contemporary Europe. I investigate political attempts to control African Swine Fever (ASF) – currently considered as the most threatening global animal disease –through the implementation of different more-than-human governing practices: (1) Fencing - the construction of fences in order to immobilize viruses and ‘risky’ wild animals, classified as disease reservoirs, (2) Zoning - the demarcation of zones with different biosecurity levels and regulations and (3) Mapping - the creation of geographical maps to visualize zones, fences and ‘risky’ (im)mobilities, (4) Killing – the elimination of animals considered disease vectors. By doing so, the project investigates how the production of animal health (re)produces, shifts or subverts current spatial and political orderings in Europe. For this purpose, the project considers animals and viruses themselves as political actors and asks how they continuously challenge governing practices and how they reveal inconsistencies in existing spatial and political orders. Conceptually speaking, the project focuses on the tension between animals, power and space and thus contributes to a more-than-human political geography. Empirically speaking, the project builds on qualitative-ethnographic fieldwork throughout Europe, especially in the German-Polish borderlands, and southern Africa. This multi-sited research design allows a differentiated understanding of the spatial production of animal health by taking into account (post)colonial and transregional interrelations.
- The Contested Solidarities of Refugee Support : Actions between Humanitarian Help and Political Activism (2014-2018)
In my dissertation project, I investigated the manifold practices in support of refugees that emerged around the so called “European refugee crisis” in 2015. This historical point in time mobilized an unprecedented number of residents to “help”. They engaged in volunteering practices and founded numerous citizens’ initiatives in support of refugees in different European countries. During 20 months of qualitative and ethnographic fieldwork in Southern Germany, I conducted interviews and participant observations with different actors involved. My research project revealed how helping practices developed in an ambivalent space between (supposedly) ‘apolitical’ forms of humanitarian helping and political activism. Moreover, it showed that volunteering with refugees is deeply intertwined with questions of power and can have ambiguous and unintended effects. Solidarity with refugees is thus embedded into differing, at times conflictive, aims and interests. Yet, it also comes with visions of a ‘better society’ bringing about political possibilities for more inclusive ways of living-together in an age of intensified migration.
